Sweden to Supply Gripen Fighter Jets to Ukraine Amid Military Modernization Efforts

Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel are currently undergoing training on Swedish Gripen fighter jets, with a significant expansion of the training program expected this autumn.

Swedish Defence Minister Paul Jonson stated that the introduction of Gripen aircraft into the Ukrainian Armed Forces represents a “new chapter in the history of the country’s air defense.” He emphasized that Ukraine is not just acquiring aircraft but is also building a modern air force capable of conducting operations under challenging conditions.

Jonson noted, “Training for Ukrainian pilots and technical staff is already underway and will be expanded this fall. The Gripen C/D jets can be compatible with various weapon systems, including IRIS-T, AMRAAM, and long-range Meteor missiles. This encompasses aircraft, armaments, skills, and technical support.”

Regarding the timeline for delivery, the Swedish Defence Minister confirmed that the transfer of fighter jets is planned to begin in early next year, following the necessary approvals and decisions. Sweden intends to donate a total of 16 Gripen C/D fighters to Ukraine, while Ukraine also plans to procure up to 20 new Gripen E/F aircraft to further develop its future air force capabilities.

The objective of this collaboration is to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities promptly and lay the groundwork for modernizing its air force over the coming decades. Jonson concluded, “Stronger Ukrainian air forces will reduce the space for Russian aggression and make Europe safer.”

Previously, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence identified the Swedish JAS 39 Gripen as a key priority for strengthening its air forces. The first 16 aircraft of the C and D variants are expected to arrive in Ukraine this winter, with plans for the acquisition of more than 20 units of the latest E series in the future.

The initial batch of Swedish fighter jets will be delivered alongside long-range Meteor air-to-air missiles. The JAS 39 Gripen, developed by Saab, is designed for high effectiveness against Russian air defense systems. The combination of these aircraft with Meteor missiles will provide a so-called “long arm” for the Ukrainian Air Force, enabling effective deterrence of Russian aircraft carrying guided aerial bombs from the front lines and offering substantial protection for Ukrainian ground troops.

Sweden is set to supply Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine as part of a broader effort to modernize its air force. The training program for Ukrainian personnel is already underway, with the first aircraft expected to arrive in early 2024, enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities.
