Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated his readiness for genuine discussions aimed at concluding the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have stated that they have long been prepared for negotiations.
According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian side has been ready for meetings for some time, emphasizing the need to establish a specific format for dialogue. “We have been prepared for meetings for a while; it is essential to find a format. We need to end this war and ensure reliable security guarantees,” Zelensky remarked.
Zelensky highlighted that the primary objective of any negotiations should not only be to halt hostilities but also to create robust security assurances for Ukraine.
Previously, Putin had expressed his willingness to meet with Zelensky in a third country, with the Kremlin stating that a final agreement between the two nations would be a prerequisite for such a meeting. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who delivered a message from Zelensky to Putin, noted that Zelensky should reach out directly to Putin if he is genuinely interested in discussing the end of the war.
At the same time, Putin has been accused of obstructing humanitarian efforts. He claimed that Ukraine is supposedly “not ready” for a large-scale prisoner exchange, effectively derailing agreements for a swap of 1,000 prisoners on each side.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a willingness to engage in peace talks with Ukraine, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists on the need for a structured dialogue. Both leaders face challenges in establishing a framework for negotiations amid ongoing humanitarian concerns.
