Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his belief that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is the most suitable negotiator for discussions between Russia and the European Union. In a recent press interaction, Putin stated, “For me personally, the best is former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr. Schröder,” when asked about potential mediators.
Putin also indicated his willingness to engage in talks with any European politician, excluding those he claims have made disparaging remarks in the past.
This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the possibility of establishing direct communication channels between the EU and the Kremlin. António Costa, President of the European Council, recently highlighted the EU’s interest in avoiding isolation from the peace process, which is currently being led by the United States.
Costa emphasized the importance of ensuring that Europe is not sidelined in negotiations for a peace agreement. However, he noted that Russia has not yet shown a willingness to participate in serious discussions.
Additionally, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Putin is open to dialogue with all parties, including the EU, but clarified that Moscow does not intend to initiate negotiations.
Vladimir Putin has identified Gerhard Schröder as an ideal negotiator for EU-Russia discussions, while expressing a general openness to dialogue with European leaders. This comes as the EU explores ways to engage with Russia amid ongoing tensions and the risk of being excluded from peace negotiations.
