The ongoing controversy surrounding the White Eagle Order in Poland has been clarified by President Karol Nawrocki, who emphasized that the issue is rooted in historical matters rather than domestic politics or anti-Ukrainian sentiments. His comments were reported by RBC-Ukraine, referencing Polsat News.
Nawrocki dismissed claims that the award scandal is linked to fostering hostility towards Ukrainians within Poland. He stated that the debate is strictly about historical memory and expressed confidence that Polish patriots, including the president and government, would unite in such circumstances.
Additionally, Nawrocki remarked on the negative perception of the “red-black Bandera flag” in Poland. He addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky directly, asserting, “This dispute does not concern internal issues in Poland. They do not exist… President Zelensky is mistaken.”
The remarks follow Zelensky’s recent statement accusing Nawrocki of engaging in internal political struggles by inciting hatred towards Ukrainians. The Ukrainian leader warned that such actions could lead to societal radicalization and potentially escalate tensions. He highlighted that Ukrainians are currently defending the security of both Poland and the broader European Union.
It is important to note that on June 19, Nawrocki made the decision to revoke Zelensky’s White Eagle Order, Poland’s highest state honor. This action was taken in response to a Ukrainian military unit being awarded an honorary title in memory of the Heroes of the UPA.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has clarified that the controversy over the White Eagle Order is a historical issue, not a political one. His remarks come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused him of inciting anti-Ukrainian sentiments in Poland.
