The Norwegian government has announced a funding package of 2.8 billion kroner (approximately $302 million) to procure American weapons for Ukraine through the PURL mechanism.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized that Norway, alongside European partners, is financing military aid packages from the United States to bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts.
“We are now supporting another important contribution. I hope that more European countries will join in ensuring that Ukraine receives essential military equipment quickly,” he stated.
This latest commitment brings Norway’s total funding for American weapons for Ukraine through the PURL initiative to over 12.5 billion kroner (about $1.36 billion).
It is important to note that following Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Washington altered its strategy for supporting Kyiv, gradually moving away from direct military assistance. Instead, the PURL program was established in collaboration with NATO.
This initiative aims to provide Ukraine with critically important American weaponry that lacks equivalents among European partners.
The program’s mechanics involve creating a prioritized list of needs, which is agreed upon with allies, while funding is managed through a joint NATO fund. The United States is responsible for the direct logistics of delivering equipment and ammunition directly to the front lines.
Norway has committed significant funding to support Ukraine's defense through the procurement of U.S. military equipment. This initiative, part of the PURL program, reflects a broader shift in U.S. strategy regarding military aid to Ukraine.
