Negotiations between the United States and Iran are nearing completion, although President Donald Trump has opted to reassess certain aspects of the impending agreement.
According to a senior administration official and a second source familiar with the matter, Trump has introduced new requirements after reviewing the draft agreements reached by American representatives during discussions with Iranian officials.
Two American officials noted that while the president aims to finalize the agreement soon, he seeks to impose stricter conditions on several key issues.
Sources indicated that the provisions concerning Iran’s nuclear program have raised the most concerns for the US president.
The current draft stipulates Iran’s commitment to refrain from developing nuclear weapons and outlines a 60-day period for negotiations regarding the limitation of Tehran’s nuclear activities and the potential easing of American sanctions.
A central point of contention is expected to be the issue of enriched uranium stocks and further restrictions on its production.
“This relates more to the specifics of how the US obtains the material and the timelines involved,” stated a senior administration official, referring to enriched uranium.
Additionally, the president has proposed revising certain language concerning maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the additional demands from Washington, US officials believe that the agreement remains close to finalization.
One White House official remarked that the American side is prepared to wait as long as necessary to secure a document that meets all of the president’s requirements.
Sources indicate that the Iranian side will need several days to prepare a response to the new proposals.
