The mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ruslan Martsykiv, has raised concerns over recent protests against labor migrants, suggesting that Russian propaganda is exploiting the situation. His remarks follow a local housing authority’s announcement regarding the potential hiring of migrant workers.
Martsykiv noted that the number of labor migrants from India in the region is minimal, with only 36 individuals currently present. He expressed his strong opposition to labor migration, advocating instead for local solutions to workforce shortages through retraining and engaging women in the labor market.
In light of the ongoing conflict, Martsykiv emphasized the need for careful consideration before taking any actions that could be perceived as aiding Russian narratives. He urged local activists to refrain from organizing protests, fearing that such demonstrations could inadvertently support Moscow’s propaganda efforts.
“We are at war, and we must think ten times before taking any steps that could harm the Ukrainian state,” Martsykiv stated.
He acknowledged that in peacetime, protests could be seen as a democratic expression. However, he believes that the current context requires a more cautious approach. “I am against migrants, but I believe that using this topic can be detrimental to Ukraine,” he concluded.
