German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has indicated that peace negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine may commence as early as this summer. He noted that neither side appears to hold a significant advantage on the battlefield, suggesting that the war has reached a stalemate.
Wadephul remarked, “Peace talks regarding Ukraine could start this summer.” He further speculated that Russian President Vladimir Putin might currently be at a point where he is seriously considering this option.
On June 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky published an open letter directed at Putin, proposing a meeting in a neutral country to discuss terms for a lasting peace. This initiative was aimed at multiple audiences, including the Kremlin leader, members of the Russian elite, and Ukraine’s international partners.
In response, Putin criticized Zelensky’s proposal, claiming it exhibited a “rude tone” and declined the offer for personal negotiations, stating that he sees no purpose in such discussions.
