Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented images of the damage inflicted by a Russian attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to U.S. President Donald Trump during a meeting at the G7 summit. This information was reported by unnamed European diplomats to Reuters.
According to one diplomat, Trump expressed his disapproval of the Russian assault. Another diplomat noted that Zelensky’s decision to share these images was a strategically sound move from a psychological perspective.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has stood for over a thousand years and represents a significant part of Ukraine’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
On June 15, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, deploying numerous drones and missiles targeting Kyiv. Reports indicated that the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was among the sites hit, resulting in a fire at the location. Official sources confirmed that a strike drone was used in the attack.
The assault caused damage to the Assumption Cathedral. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Tetiana Berezhna, stated that emergency responders and the monastery’s brotherhood acted swiftly to mitigate risks to human life.
Additionally, Bishop Avraamiy reported that the monastery organized an urgent evacuation of ancient icons, liturgical items, and other valuables to ensure their protection.
