Concerns Rise Over Potential Resumption of Nuclear Testing by Major Powers

The international community is facing renewed concerns regarding the possibility of nuclear testing by the United States or Russia. Robert Floyd, the executive secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, issued this warning, emphasizing the risks associated with such actions.

Floyd stated that even a single nuclear test could trigger similar responses from other nations, potentially leading to a dangerous chain reaction. He cautioned that this scenario could spiral out of control, increasing global instability.

Since the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) opened for signature in 1996, the world has witnessed over 2,000 nuclear tests, with a significant reduction in activities following the treaty’s introduction. Currently, fewer than ten tests have been recorded, primarily from North Korea.

Despite this progress, the treaty has yet to come into force due to the lack of ratification by several key states, including the United States, China, and Iran. While Russia ratified the treaty, it retracted its decision in 2023, raising further alarms.

As tensions escalate, both the U.S. and Russia have indicated the potential for resuming nuclear tests by late 2025, which has alarmed the global community. Floyd urged major powers, particularly the U.S., Russia, and China, to ratify the treaty and adhere to a global moratorium on nuclear testing. He noted that existing international monitoring systems are capable of detecting even low-yield nuclear explosions.

The possibility of renewed nuclear testing by the U.S. or Russia has raised alarms within the international community. Robert Floyd of the CTBT Organization warns that such actions could provoke a dangerous chain reaction among nations, urging major powers to ratify the treaty and maintain a testing moratorium.
