Coinbase Launches ‘Coinbase for Agents’ to Enable AI-Driven Crypto Transactions

Coinbase has introduced a new platform called ‘Coinbase for Agents,’ which allows artificial intelligence assistants, including ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, to interact directly with users’ Coinbase accounts. This initiative aims to facilitate automated financial transactions, enhancing the user experience in cryptocurrency trading.

Launched on Wednesday, the platform enables AI agents to perform a variety of tasks such as trading cryptocurrencies, accessing market data, and making payments for online services. Users can set defined spending and risk limits, ensuring a degree of control over the automated transactions.

According to Coinbase, the platform leverages advanced trading tools that can be accessed through natural language commands. This functionality allows users to authorize a range of activities, from portfolio rebalancing to executing automated trading strategies. Initially, the service supports trading in spot crypto and derivatives markets, with future plans to include equities and prediction markets.

Additionally, Coinbase is integrating its x402 payments protocol, which is designed for machine-to-machine transactions. This feature will enable AI agents to make small payments for services, such as premium research and data APIs, without requiring manual checkout processes or subscriptions.

Coinbase describes this launch as a significant move toward what it terms ‘agentic commerce,’ envisioning a future where AI systems increasingly handle financial transactions on behalf of users. The company referenced projections indicating that autonomous agents could represent as much as 20% of e-commerce activities by 2030.

To mitigate security risks, Coinbase has implemented measures that allow AI agents to operate within isolated portfolios. The platform will soon include customizable controls, such as spending caps and trade limits, as well as restrictions on the services that agents can access.

Coinbase's new 'Coinbase for Agents' platform allows AI assistants to manage cryptocurrency transactions for users. The initiative aims to streamline trading while maintaining user-defined security measures.
