New Android Feature Enhances Text Selection Across Apps

Recent updates to the Android operating system have introduced a feature that allows users to copy text from applications that typically restrict such actions. This tool, known as Select, is integrated into the recent apps menu and aims to streamline the process of transferring information.

The Select tool’s primary function is to enable users to copy content from apps that usually do not allow text selection, such as messaging platforms and social media posts. Unlike the conventional clipboard method, which requires multiple steps to copy and paste text, the Select tool operates locally, providing a more efficient user experience.

For instance, if a user receives an address via a message, they can access the recent apps menu, select the relevant text, and paste it directly into a navigation application without the need for manual editing.

Steps to Utilize the Select Feature

To activate and use this hidden interface capability, follow these straightforward steps:

  • Open the Recent Apps Menu: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold, or tap the square navigation button.
  • Locate the Select Button: An option labeled Select will appear at the bottom of the screen, next to the screenshot button. Tap this option.
  • Select the Desired Content: The system will highlight all recognizable areas on the current app screen. Long press on the desired text or image.
  • Choose an Action: A menu will appear, allowing you to select from options such as Copy, Share, or Search online.

Limitations of the Select Tool

While the Select tool is versatile, it does have certain limitations due to system constraints:

Content Restrictions: The feature does not recognize system icons, branded logos, or interface elements embedded in the app as graphic code. These items will not be highlighted when the mode is activated.

Additionally, the system only analyzes what is displayed in the recent apps window at that moment. If a user is reading a lengthy article in a browser and the desired paragraph is below the visible area, the feature will not detect it. In such cases, users must return to the app, scroll to the relevant section, and repeat the selection process.

The new Select feature in Android enhances the ability to copy content from applications that typically restrict text selection. While it streamlines the process, users should be aware of its limitations regarding certain content types and visibility in the recent apps menu.
