NASA’s Psyche Spacecraft Completes Key Gravity Assist Maneuver Near Mars

The NASA Psyche spacecraft has successfully executed a critical gravity assist maneuver near Mars, utilizing the planet’s gravitational pull to accelerate its journey. This maneuver serves as a crucial rehearsal ahead of the spacecraft’s arrival at the solar system’s most metal-rich asteroid.

While the primary objective of the flyby was to gain gravitational acceleration, the scientific team took advantage of the opportunity to conduct extensive tests on the onboard equipment of Psyche.

Approaching Mars from the side opposite the Sun, the spacecraft’s cameras captured the Red Planet in a crescent shape—an angle that is not visible from Earth.

During its pass, Psyche’s multispectral camera captured thousands of wide-angle photographs, documenting features such as the southern polar ice cap and the extensive Valles Marineris canyon system.

According to Jim Bell, the lead imaging scientist, these observations will assist researchers in perfectly calibrating the instruments before the spacecraft reaches its final destination.

In addition to the cameras, ground engineers tested two key scientific instruments:

  • Gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers: These instruments were calibrated to measure the chemical composition of Martian soil directly beneath the spacecraft’s flight path.
  • Magnetometer: This device successfully recorded specific interactions between the solar wind and the upper layers of Mars’ atmosphere, as well as residual magnetic fields of the planet.

Launched in October 2023 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, the spacecraft employs advanced plasma (ion) engines. These engines operate smoothly yet continuously, gradually building momentum for a journey spanning approximately 3.6 billion kilometers.

The successful maneuver near Mars has put the Psyche spacecraft on a direct trajectory toward its primary objective. The main event of this mission is anticipated in the summer of 2029, when the spacecraft is set to approach the unique asteroid Psyche.
