Microsoft has begun to retract its aggressive integration of artificial intelligence within Windows 11, responding to user dissatisfaction. The company has removed certain elements of its Copilot feature and introduced official tools that allow users to disable or remove AI functionalities from their systems.
The discontent among users stems from a recent automatic update that surreptitiously installed the Copilot panel along with various other AI tools on millions of computers without explicit consent. Many users have expressed concerns regarding the use of cloud-based algorithms to analyze their activities on personal devices.
Although there is no straightforward toggle to disable AI features in the system settings, enthusiasts have identified two reliable methods to completely eliminate these functionalities.
Method 1: Official Disabling via System Settings
A recent update to Windows 11 has introduced an official option to block AI features, applicable to users of Windows 11 Pro or higher. To remove or disable Copilot, follow these steps:
1. Press the Win + R keys on your keyboard.
2. In the dialog box that appears, type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
3. Navigate to: User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows AI.
4. Locate the option “Remove Microsoft Copilot App”, double-click on it, select Enabled, and click OK. This action will remove the app from your system.
If you prefer to deactivate the application instead of removing it entirely, find the folder for Windows Copilot in the same Windows Components menu, select Turn off Windows Copilot, and set it to Enabled.
It is important to note that this option may not be visible if you have used Copilot at least once in the past 28 days.
Method 2: Complete System Cleanup with a Script
For users with the standard Home edition of Windows 11, who cannot access the first method, a more radical yet effective approach is available. A community of developers has created a free script called RemoveWindowsAI on GitHub.
This tool removes all references to artificial intelligence from various parts of the operating system. To use it:
- Visit the RemoveWindowsAI project page on GitHub and copy the current command from the How to use section.
- Open PowerShell on your computer as an administrator.
- Paste the copied command and execute it.
The program will present a simple menu, allowing you to choose which AI services you wish to disable.
In addition to Copilot, this script can disable the controversial Recall feature, which takes screenshots of the PC or laptop every minute. The script will automatically remove AI from every application in the operating system.
In response to user concerns, Microsoft has initiated a rollback of AI features in Windows 11, providing tools for users to disable or remove these functionalities. Two methods have been identified for this process, catering to different system versions.
