EU Considers Sanctions Over Alleged Smuggling of Stolen Ukrainian Grain to Israel

The European Union (EU) is contemplating sanctions against individuals suspected of facilitating the transport of stolen Ukrainian grain to the Israeli port of Haifa. This decision follows the arrival of another vessel in Haifa Bay, believed to be carrying grain taken from occupied territories in Ukraine.

In a statement, the EU condemned “all actions that contribute to financing Russia’s illegal military efforts and circumventing sanctions.” The bloc is particularly focused on Israeli entities that may be aiding Russia in evading international restrictions imposed due to its actions in Ukraine.

As part of its response, the EU is seeking information from Israel regarding the imported Ukrainian wheat that has been reportedly stolen by Russia. An EU spokesperson for foreign affairs, Anouar El-Anouni, noted that the bloc is aware of reports indicating that a Russian vessel, part of a shadow fleet, was allowed to unload its cargo in Haifa despite prior communications between Ukraine and Israeli authorities on the matter.

El-Anouni stated, “We condemn all actions that assist in financing Russia’s illegal military efforts and circumventing EU sanctions, and we remain prepared to combat such actions by adding individuals and organizations in third countries to our sanctions list if necessary.” He emphasized the EU’s commitment to collaborating with Ukraine in gathering further information from Israeli authorities on this issue.
