Apple to Revamp AirPods Control Interface in Upcoming iOS Update

Apple is set to introduce significant changes to the AirPods control interface with the forthcoming iOS 27 update. According to insider reports, these updates aim to simplify the current complex settings for sound and functionality of the popular wireless earbuds.

The AirPods have garnered praise for their seamless integration within Apple’s ecosystem, allowing users to connect instantly to iPhones, switch effortlessly to iPads or Macs, and work smoothly with Apple TV. However, this convenience diminishes when users seek personalized settings.

Currently, there is no dedicated app for managing AirPods. Instead, Apple has scattered various settings throughout the device:

  • Noice Cancellation and Spatial Audio are accessible via the Control Center (by long-pressing the volume slider).
  • Button Customization is buried deep within Bluetooth settings.
  • Equalizer Adjustments are found separately in the Apple Music app settings.

This fragmented approach can be confusing, especially for users transitioning from Android, where each brand typically offers a unified app for such controls.

Bloomberg reports that Apple has taken user feedback into account. While the company does not plan to create a standalone AirPods app, it intends to completely redesign the settings menu on the iPhone.

The primary goal is to make management more straightforward and coherent, consolidating all controls in one accessible location. The updated menu is expected to have a prominent position in the settings list, with clear textual explanations for each function.

Experts anticipate that Apple may also introduce helpful tips and animations to assist users in navigating complex features like the “Adaptive Transparency Mode,” which reduces loud external sounds while keeping music playing.

Despite these enhancements, tech bloggers emphasize that Apple has yet to address another crucial issue: flexible sound customization. Currently, AirPods lack a detailed manual equalizer, offering only preset templates (such as “More Bass”) that cannot be tailored to individual hearing preferences. Users are left to cope with standard sound profiles if the presets do not meet their needs.

Experts hope that if not in iOS 27, future updates will finally allow users to adjust frequencies, a feature that competitors have provided for years.

Apple is planning a major overhaul of the AirPods control interface in the upcoming iOS 27 update, aiming to streamline user settings. While the redesign will enhance accessibility, the absence of a detailed equalizer remains a concern for users seeking personalized audio experiences.
