Apple has secured a patent for a novel optical system designed to enhance underwater photography capabilities on iPhones, eliminating the need for bulky external accessories. This technology aims to mitigate image distortion and protect camera modules from moisture, potentially transforming how users capture images beneath the surface.

For years, iPhone users have relied on external accessories for underwater shooting, but these often come with significant drawbacks. Traditional dome ports, which protect camera lenses, tend to be large and cumbersome, frequently causing optical distortions when submerged.

The patent, titled “Plurality Of Optical Centers In A Unified Free Form, Hemispherical Optic,” proposes a solution: a sleek protective system that can easily fit within a standard smartphone case. This innovation seeks to streamline the underwater photography experience by integrating protection into the device itself.

Instead of requiring separate protective domes for each camera lens, Apple suggests utilizing a single, continuous protective layer. This design would serve as an external lens for all the smartphone’s cameras simultaneously, enhancing usability while maintaining image quality.

Key features of this invention include:

  • Universal Shape: The protective optic will adapt its form based on the arrangement of the cameras. If the cameras are positioned on a flat surface, the protective layer will be primarily flat. Conversely, if the cameras are on a curved surface, the protective glass will mirror that curvature.
  • Seamless Construction: The component will be crafted from a single piece of material, eliminating the need for adhesives, seams, or other connecting elements.
  • Enhanced Waterproofing: The absence of joints minimizes the risk of water ingress, addressing common issues related to image distortion caused by glue or seams.

The patent lists two engineers, Ryan M. Sheridan and Benjamin D. Buckner, as its authors. Notably, Buckner has a history of research at Apple focused on eliminating fisheye optical distortion, indicating a strong background in addressing complex imaging challenges.
