The United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency session on Monday at Ukraine’s request, following a significant escalation in Russian military attacks, as confirmed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
Sybiha highlighted the recent wave of strikes as a stark reminder that Moscow continues to choose escalation over peace and terror over diplomacy. He emphasized the necessity of sustained international pressure on Russia to restore respect for the UN Charter and to advance a substantive proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky aimed at ending the conflict.
On June 4, President Zelensky released an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing a clear date for a meeting. He noted that other parties, including Europe and the United States, could join the ongoing bilateral discussions.
Zelensky asserted that the current front line should serve as the starting point for diplomatic efforts and expressed Ukraine’s willingness to implement a complete ceasefire during negotiations.
In response, President Putin stated that he currently sees no point in such a meeting. He urged Russian military personnel to continue their operations, indicating a lack of interest in diplomatic engagement at this time.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Zelensky’s letter, suggesting that it would be beneficial for the two leaders to meet.
The UN Security Council will meet urgently at Ukraine's request due to escalating Russian attacks. President Zelensky has proposed a meeting with President Putin to discuss peace, but Putin remains unresponsive.
