Ukrainian Drones Strike Moscow Oil Refinery Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian drones have targeted a major oil refinery in Moscow for the second time this week, alongside other military sites in Russia and occupied territories of Ukraine. The attacks were confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky via his Telegram channel.

President Zelensky described the strikes as a justified response to Russian assaults on Ukrainian cities and communities. He emphasized that these operations are part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to disrupt the Russian military’s supply chain.

In his statement, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Ukraine’s defense and security forces, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Special Operations Forces, and the missile brigade, for their effective coordination and accuracy in executing these strikes.

“Our partners have noted the precision and effectiveness of our long-range strikes. It is time to end this war, and Russia must take necessary diplomatic steps,” he stated.

The SBU reported that the Moscow oil refinery is experiencing at least four significant fires, with large plumes of black smoke visible from various parts of the city. Preliminary assessments indicate that the drones targeted the refinery’s tank farm, a primary crude oil processing unit, and a diesel hydro-treatment facility.

The Moscow oil refinery is the largest in the city and plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to the capital, providing a significant portion of gasoline and over 50% of diesel fuel for the region, as well as fuel for Moscow’s airports.

This latest attack follows a previous strike on June 16, which had temporarily halted operations at the facility.

In a related incident on June 18, Moscow and its surrounding areas faced what has been described as the most extensive drone assault to date. The Kapotnya oil refinery was once again targeted, resulting in a large fire that continues to burn.

As a precaution, the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD), a vital transport route, has been partially closed, and drivers have been advised to seek alternative routes. Additionally, authorities implemented a plan known as “Kover” in response to the aerial threat, leading to the suspension of operations at all major airports in the city, including Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo.

Further details regarding the implications of these drone strikes on Moscow can be found in subsequent reports.
