Ukraine’s President Discusses Russia’s Citizenship Move in Transnistria

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed Russia’s recent decision to simplify the process for residents of Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova, to obtain Russian citizenship. Zelensky outlined two primary motivations behind this action.

According to Zelensky, this initiative not only aims to recruit new soldiers for the Russian military but also serves to assert Russia’s claim over Transnistria, effectively designating the region as part of its territory. He stated, “Russia’s actions indicate that they are interested in more than just the Donbas region, contrary to what they often claim to various interlocutors. This requires a response from us.”

The president emphasized the significance of the Russian military presence and intelligence operations in Transnistria, describing them as a challenge for Ukraine. He expressed Ukraine’s interest in a stable and strong Moldova, recognizing the implications of Russian influence in the region.

Zelensky has instructed the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to engage with Moldova for a joint assessment and coordinated response to this development. He also anticipates recommendations from Ukrainian intelligence and security services regarding potential actions.

In concluding his remarks, he urged Russia to focus on its own domestic issues rather than interfering in the affairs of other nations. “Russia should be more concerned about its oil refineries and energy logistics rather than the citizenship of foreign nationals and the lands of other peoples,” he stated.

President Zelensky's comments highlight Ukraine's concerns over Russia's citizenship policy in Transnistria, emphasizing military recruitment and territorial claims. He advocates for a coordinated response with Moldova to counter Russian influence in the region.
