Ukrainian forces have targeted facilities associated with the Russian gas industry in the Orenburg region, located over 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s borders. This action is part of what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine.
During a recent address, Zelenskyy referred to these strikes as “long-range sanctions,” emphasizing that Ukraine would retaliate in kind against Russian aggression. He stated, “We will act mirror-like in response to Russia,” highlighting the geographical distance yet significant impact of the strikes.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine had previously proposed a ceasefire, but after a brief period of relative calm, Russia resumed its drone and aerial bombardments. “Unfortunately, after three days of relative quiet, the ‘Shahed’ strikes returned, along with aerial bombs. Frontline activity remains high. Therefore, we respond,” he remarked.
Despite the military actions, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to pursuing diplomatic avenues to resolve the conflict. He stated, “We continue to work with our partners to push for diplomacy—to push for peace, no matter how difficult it may be.” This underscores Ukraine’s dual approach of military readiness coupled with a desire for a negotiated settlement.
Ukraine has launched strikes against Russian gas facilities in the Orenburg region, marking a significant response to renewed Russian attacks. President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for both military action and diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.
