Ukraine Rejects Kremlin’s Proposal for Gerhard Schröder as Mediator

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has dismissed the Kremlin’s suggestion to involve former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in peace negotiations. He criticized Moscow’s approach to selecting intermediaries.

Responding to inquiries about potential European negotiators, Sybiha stated, “But it’s definitely not Schröder. I want to preempt any further suggestions from the Russians, such as Gérard Depardieu or Steven Seagal, and maybe even Viktor Orbán as their negotiator.” He did not provide specific names of official candidates, noting that the diplomatic process is still ongoing.

Sybiha explained that discussions regarding the representation format are still in progress. Options include a group of countries, a coalition of leaders, or a specific mechanism. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to discuss this in various formats, including the I3 format, in the near future.

The minister emphasized the need for swift action and clear objectives, stating, “It should not be drawn out.” He also warned against individual leaders reaching out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, following Ukraine’s proposal for mediation. He noted that there have been several unsolicited offers in this regard.

“This should not happen. It shows weakness and divides Europe. This is precisely what Putin is waiting for—individual leaders or representatives to approach him,” Sybiha remarked.

He stressed that Europe must present a united front and has real leverage, such as sanctions and frozen assets, to do so. Furthermore, he highlighted that all parameters regarding Europe’s role in the peace process will be determined in conjunction with Ukraine, asserting that the process cannot proceed without Ukrainian involvement.

It is worth noting that the Kremlin had proposed Schröder, a long-time friend of Putin, as a potential mediator in the negotiations.

Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers are set to discuss candidates for the role of negotiator with Russia, with reports indicating a new name has emerged in the conversation.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has firmly rejected the Kremlin's proposal to involve Gerhard Schröder in peace negotiations, emphasizing the need for a united European approach. The search for suitable negotiators continues as discussions evolve.
