Ukraine Introduces New Military Service Model with Fixed-Term Contracts and Guaranteed Breaks

Ukraine has approved a new military service model that introduces fixed-term contracts and guarantees a right to a break following their completion. This development was announced by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov via Telegram.

The reform aims to standardize the process of granting breaks after the end of a contract, making it a mandatory aspect of service conditions that is established at the time of signing.

The minimum duration for a break is set at six months, with the possibility of extension based on the total length of service and the individual’s involvement in combat operations.

The calculation mechanism for determining the length of the break takes into account both the duration of service under the contract and prior experience, including participation in combat. The more time a servicemember has spent on the front lines, the longer their recovery period will be.

Additionally, prior service before signing new contracts and the period leading up to the full-scale invasion are also considered in this assessment. This approach allows for the establishment of a personalized break duration that can significantly exceed the minimum requirement.

The central objective of this reform is to enhance the transparency and predictability of service conditions. Servicemembers will have a clearer understanding of the duration of their contracts, the payments they will receive, and the guaranteed rest period following their service.

This new system of breaks is part of a broader transformation of military service in Ukraine, aimed at increasing its predictability and resilience.

Ukraine's new military service model introduces fixed-term contracts with guaranteed breaks, aiming to enhance transparency and predictability for servicemembers. The reform establishes a minimum six-month break, adjustable based on service duration and combat experience, reflecting a significant shift in military policy.
