Ukraine Calls for International Response After Russian Missile Strikes on Kyiv

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged the country’s missions at international organizations to fully utilize multilateral mechanisms in response to the recent Russian missile attack on Kyiv. This statement was made on social media on May 24, following a significant assault by Russian forces.

Sybiha emphasized the need for organizations such as the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, and UNESCO to take appropriate action against what he described as aggression targeting civilians. He stated, “We will immediately initiate an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, as well as a joint session of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation and the Permanent Council of the OSCE.”

The minister accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to intimidate not only Ukraine but also the global community by using medium-range ballistic missiles against civilian populations. He called for a coordinated international response to this threat.

“We urge our partners to take decisive multilateral actions aimed at deterring Russia and compelling it towards a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,” Sybiha added.

Earlier that night, Ukraine experienced a massive assault from Russia, with the Ukrainian Air Force reporting that Russian forces launched 600 drones of various types and 90 missiles from air, sea, and land platforms, primarily targeting Kyiv.

The attack resulted in the deaths of two individuals in Kyiv, while 81 others sustained injuries. Damage was reported at over 40 locations across several districts, including Shevchenkivskyi, Darnytskyi, Desnyanskyi, Obolonskyi, and Holosiivskyi.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the strikes impacted residential buildings, shopping centers, educational institutions, a market, and administrative buildings belonging to the State Emergency Service and police, as well as the National Museum of Chernobyl.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed responsibility for the drone and missile strikes, including the use of ballistic missiles, asserting that they targeted military command facilities, air bases, and defense industry enterprises in Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials are calling for a strong international response following a devastating missile attack from Russia that resulted in civilian casualties and widespread damage in Kyiv. The Foreign Minister is pushing for urgent meetings at major international organizations to address the aggression.
