On May 17, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repressions while simultaneously executing significant drone attacks on Moscow and its surrounding regions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky honored the memory of those lost at the National Historical Memorial Reserve “Bykivnia Graves” and expressed gratitude to the Security Service of Ukraine and Defense Forces for their precision strikes in the Moscow region.
Ukrainian forces utilized domestically developed weaponry, including RS-1 “Bars” and FP-1 “Firepoint,” to target enemy positions in Moscow and the Moscow Oblast, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, Commander of Ukraine’s Drone Forces, indicated that May 17, 2026, could mark a pivotal moment in the conflict with Russia, as Ukrainian drones breached multiple layers of air defense systems around Moscow.
Special Operations Center “Alpha” of the SBU, alongside other defense units, successfully struck the “Angstrom” factory in the Moscow region, which supplies semiconductors for Russia’s military-industrial complex, as well as oil facilities and pumping stations.
In Crimea, infrastructure and air defense systems at the “Belbek” military airfield were also targeted. Reports indicate a fire occurred at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow following the drone strikes.
Additionally, partisans in the Moscow region damaged communication towers equipped with electronic warfare modules.
A large fire broke out at warehouses near the Izmaylovsky Kremlin in Moscow, quickly expanding to cover approximately 300 square meters.
President Zelensky remarked on the challenges posed by Russia’s air defense, stating, “The distance from the Ukrainian border is over 500 kilometers. The concentration of Russian air defense in the Moscow region is the highest. But we are overcoming it. We clearly tell the Russians: their state must end its war.”
Kyrylo Budanov, head of the President’s Office, emphasized that tyranny begins with fear and silence, leading to mass graves, but noted that Ukraine now possesses a voice, an army, and the will to resist.
On the military front, Ukrainian pilots successfully targeted a Russian patrol ship in Dagestan, nearly 1,000 kilometers from the front lines. Throughout the day, 46 clashes were reported, primarily in the Kostiantynivka direction.
Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted 279 out of 287 drones used by Russia in their attacks on Ukraine.
In Romania, an unexploded rocket was discovered in an uninhabited private property in the Tulcea County.
In addition to military developments, a minor earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 was recorded in the Poltava region near the Dykanka community.
In Kyiv, dozens gathered for a rally titled “Don’t Be Silent! Captivity Kills!” to mark the fourth anniversary of Ukrainian defenders’ captivity from the Azovstal plant.
