Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, recently emphasized that any peace agreement with Russia regarding the ongoing conflict is contingent upon Ukraine’s consent. This statement marked a notable shift in his previous rhetoric concerning Ukraine.
Fico’s remarks followed a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which they discussed various topics. Despite their differing views on some issues, Fico noted a mutual interest in fostering strong and friendly relations between Slovakia and Ukraine.
He reiterated Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union, highlighting the importance of a stable and democratic neighbor for Slovakia’s own security and interests.
In particular, Fico addressed the complexities surrounding a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. He stated, “I also emphasized that no peace agreement in the military conflict with the Russian Federation is possible without the agreement of the Ukrainian side.”
Looking ahead, Fico and Zelensky have planned to meet on Monday in Yerevan during the European Political Community summit. They also agreed to continue their collaboration through joint government meetings and reciprocal visits to each other’s capitals.
