Slovak Prime Minister Advocates for Dialogue with Russia, Suggests Understanding of ‘Russian Soul’ is Essential

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has proposed that Europe should be represented by someone who understands the intricacies of the Russian psyche in negotiations with President Vladimir Putin.

Fico indicated that while European politicians may publicly criticize engagement with Moscow, many are privately interested in the Kremlin’s stance and the potential for dialogue. He noted that discussions about Russia often continue informally after official meetings.

“The most important thing in these conversations… is that, on one hand, I am criticized, but believe me, when I go to the restroom, they follow me and ask, ‘Robert, what is Putin saying?'” Fico remarked.

Regarding negotiations with Russia, Fico expressed confusion over the reluctance of some European nations to engage in direct dialogue with Moscow. He emphasized that a negotiation process is not feasible without contact with the Russian side.

He stated, “Why, for heaven’s sake, aren’t you going to him and engaging in dialogue? We need to have a normal conversation with Russia,” underscoring the necessity of finding a communication format with the Kremlin to discuss resolution options.

Fico also addressed Putin’s comments about the potential involvement of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a mediator in talks. He suggested that Putin seeks individuals familiar with Russian politics and the country’s nuances.

“Putin simply wants someone who knows a bit about this Russian soul,” Fico commented, adding that it is impractical to send someone unfamiliar with Russia and its political system to negotiations.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called for a more nuanced approach to negotiations with Russia, emphasizing the importance of understanding the country's political landscape. His remarks highlight a divide among European leaders regarding engagement with Moscow.
