According to Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy, Tetiana Berezhna, the assault on the Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most significant cultural and spiritual landmarks, has raised serious concerns. She described the incident as a “very grave piece of news,” emphasizing the global importance of the site.
In the wake of the attack, Bishop Avraamy reported on Facebook that the Lavra had initiated an emergency evacuation of sacred items and liturgical objects, including ancient icons and other valuables, to safeguard them from further harm.
Berezhna confirmed that the Assumption Cathedral sustained damage during the attack. Emergency services are currently working to contain the aftermath while adhering to safety protocols. A thorough assessment of the damage will follow once the situation stabilizes.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Lavra’s community and the dedicated work of rescue and firefighting teams, the risks to human life and the preservation of sacred artifacts have been minimized, according to Bishop Avraamy.
