The Russian government is intensifying the militarization of its higher education system by integrating educational institutions into military training programs. Starting September 1, 2026, all transportation universities in Russia will introduce a mandatory foundational course on unmanned systems.
This new initiative will encompass 19 specialized universities and 86 of their branches across various regions of the country. According to estimates from the Center for Counteracting Disinformation, at least 150,000 university students will participate in this training. When including specialized colleges, the number of participants could exceed 250,000.
The Center has expressed concerns that the skills acquired through this program may be utilized by the Russian government to further engage youth in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. A representative from the Center stated, “Such steps reaffirm that the current Russian authorities are not genuinely interested in education or human development.”
Furthermore, the Center emphasized that the Russian educational system is increasingly focused on preparing a workforce tailored to the needs of the state and military sector. It was noted, “The state does not require qualified specialists capable of critical thinking. Today, the Russian education system operates solely as a conveyor belt, transforming students into compliant human resources and ‘cannon fodder’ for war.”
The Russian government is implementing a mandatory course on unmanned systems in transportation universities, aiming to prepare students for military roles. This initiative is part of a broader trend towards the militarization of education in the country.
