Poland Responds to Ukraine’s President Over Withdrawal of White Eagle Order

The Polish presidential office has addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s reaction to the revocation of the White Eagle Order. This decision has sparked a diplomatic exchange between the two nations, highlighting historical grievances and contemporary tensions.

Agnieszka Jędrzejczyk, the minister in the Polish presidential office, stated that the retention of the order by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder can be attributed to his less overtly offensive remarks towards Poland compared to Zelensky’s comments. She condemned Schröder’s ties to Russia but emphasized that his actions did not provoke the same level of outrage as Zelensky’s remarks.

Jędrzejczyk further noted that the White Eagle Order cannot be rescinded from deceased individuals, referencing its continued association with figures such as Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and Russian Empress Catherine the Great. This argument underscores the complexities of historical recognition and the implications of honoring controversial figures.

In her remarks, Jędrzejczyk drew parallels between the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the German SS units, which were condemned as war criminals at the Nuremberg Trials. She asserted that during Schröder’s tenure, no memorials were erected in Germany to honor figures like Hitler or Himmler, indicating a clear distinction in how historical figures are commemorated.

Jędrzejczyk emphasized that the core issue lies in what she perceives as deliberate disrespect from Zelensky, particularly given Poland’s support for Ukraine in recent years. She stated, “When you extend a hand of assistance and it is eagerly accepted, one should not insult the hand that helped.” She concluded by reaffirming Poland’s commitment to supporting Ukraine while insisting on mutual respect.

On June 20, President Zelensky sent the White Eagle Order to Polish President Karol Nawrocki via a postal service. Zelensky characterized the award as a symbol of trust from the Polish state and gratitude from its people, while also acknowledging Poland’s contributions to the joint struggle against Russian aggression. He indicated that Ukraine would not contest decisions regarding awards if symbols associated with figures like Catherine the Great, Mussolini, and Schröder remain in place.

Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s appreciation for Poland’s support and expressed a willingness to continue cooperation despite the recent tensions.

Previously, President Nawrocki announced the decision to revoke the White Eagle Order from Zelensky following the Ukrainian president’s decree to name a military unit after the UPA. Nawrocki stated that for a significant portion of Polish society, the UPA is viewed as a formation responsible for severe crimes against Polish citizens during World War II.

The diplomatic rift between Poland and Ukraine has deepened following the revocation of the White Eagle Order from President Zelensky. Polish officials have articulated their stance, citing historical grievances and the need for mutual respect amidst ongoing support for Ukraine.
