Inside the Operations of Ukraine’s Special Forces: Insights from a ‘Shaman’ Fighter

Ukrainian special forces, known as the Shaman Battalion, have been engaged in complex military operations across various fronts, including the defense of Kyiv and counteroffensives in the Kherson region. An anonymous fighter from the unit, referred to by the call sign ‘Kos’, shared insights into their experiences and the challenges they face.

Key Highlights:

  • Versatile Operations: The Shaman Battalion adapts quickly to diverse tasks on land, water, and air, demonstrating a high level of skill acquisition.
  • First Combat Experience: ‘Kos’ recounts his initial engagement with Russian forces at a bridge in Kherson, where he fired from a vehicle window.
  • Psychological Resilience: Despite extreme conditions during operations, including heat and exhaustion, the unit has pushed the limits of human capability.
  • Concerns Over Mobilization: ‘Kos’ expressed that readiness for war cannot be fully achieved in advance; motivation and character are critical.
  • Enemy Tactics: He noted that Russian forces continue to employ brutal tactics, often resulting in heavy casualties among their ranks.

The Shaman Battalion, part of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, has carved out a reputation for executing specialized missions. ‘Kos’ emphasized that the unit emerged from a collective of individuals who were determined to confront the war head-on.

He described the Shaman Battalion’s operations as encompassing a wide range of challenges, often executed without prior discussion on whether they would undertake a task. ‘If there is a task, we will accomplish it,’ he stated, highlighting the unit’s commitment to fulfilling orders regardless of complexity.

One notable operation involved crossing the Dnipro River, which required the battalion to learn new skills quickly. ‘We had no specialists for such tasks, but we adapted within a week,’ he explained.

‘Kos’ also shared how he joined the Shaman Battalion shortly after the full-scale war began. Having previously served in the military, he arrived in Kyiv on the same day that hostilities escalated. He was among the first to respond to the call for action, participating in the defense of Irpin.

Reflecting on the war’s onset, he noted that many veterans were aware of the impending conflict. ‘We had a pact to gather and act if a full-scale war erupted,’ he recalled, describing the moment he and his fellow veterans mobilized at 4 AM on the day the invasion began.

Throughout the interview, ‘Kos’ maintained a focus on the resilience and adaptability of his unit, underscoring the importance of character and teamwork in overcoming the challenges of modern warfare.

The interview was conducted under conditions of anonymity, and the fighter’s call sign has been changed for security reasons. For a video version of the interview, please visit the RBC Ukraine YouTube channel.
