Death Toll Rises to Five After Russian Strikes on Kyiv

The death toll from a Russian missile attack on Kyiv has increased to five, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Among the deceased was a woman who succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

Klitschko reported that the number of injured has also risen to 35, which includes two children and a pregnant woman. Emergency services are actively working to address the aftermath of the assault, which targeted residential buildings, infrastructure, and cultural sites in the capital.

“The enemy struck residential areas and key facilities, including sacred sites in Kyiv. A fire on the roof of the Uspensky Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has been contained. This UNESCO heritage site is part of ancient Kyiv. Nearby, the Mystetskyi Arsenal cultural center sustained damage, along with the Dovzhenko Film Studio,” Klitschko stated via Telegram.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack on June 15 involved a combined assault using 70 missiles and 611 drones, primarily targeting Kyiv, with additional strikes on Dnipro and Kharkiv. Air defense units reportedly intercepted 632 targets, including 50 missiles and 582 drones, but 20 ballistic missiles and 27 strike drones managed to hit 42 locations, with debris from drones landing in 12 areas.

This latest offensive follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declaration on June 12 that Russia would escalate its attacks on Ukraine. The military has consistently targeted Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various types of weaponry.

Ukrainian authorities and international organizations have classified these attacks as war crimes, emphasizing their deliberate nature. They argue that the strikes on essential services and healthcare facilities are aimed at depriving civilians of electricity, heat, water, communication, and medical assistance, which could be seen as genocidal actions.

Legal experts and human rights advocates assert that Russia’s actions during the ongoing war constitute various forms of crimes that could fall under the definition of genocide. These include public declarations of intent to eliminate Ukrainians, targeted attacks on vital infrastructure, and the persecution of pro-Ukrainian individuals in occupied territories.

The 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates its 149 member states to prevent and punish acts of genocide during both wartime and peacetime. The convention defines genocide as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

Signs of genocide include the killing of group members, causing serious bodily harm, deliberately creating conditions intended to destroy a group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children from one group to another.

Despite the evidence, Russian leadership denies that its military is intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure or causing civilian casualties in Ukraine, including hospitals, schools, and energy facilities.

The recent Russian missile strikes on Kyiv have resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting emergency services to respond to the extensive damage. Ukrainian officials classify these attacks as war crimes, highlighting their targeted nature against civilian infrastructure.
