Recent incidents in schools across Zakarpattia, including a shooting in Chop, have been linked to activities of Russian intelligence services. Investigations suggest that teenagers may have been recruited through online platforms.
At least two significant cases have been reported in the region. One incident was averted in the village of Bushytino, where a student attempted to bring a knife to school with the intent to harm classmates.
The other incident occurred in Chop and resulted in gunfire. Although there were no casualties, the minor involved faces the possibility of life imprisonment.
Authorities have determined that in both instances, Russian intelligence services were targeting adolescents via online gaming. According to local official Biletsky, children are being systematically studied, with efforts to apply psychological pressure and intimidation, pushing them toward illegal activities.
“At this moment, the attention, vigilance, and sensitivity of adults—parents, teachers, social workers—are crucial. Their timely involvement in a child’s life can prevent actions that could ruin their life or that of someone around them,”
Biletsky emphasized.
In response to these incidents, regional authorities have decided to enhance preventive measures. Schools are planning to hold parent-teacher meetings involving law enforcement to explain recruitment mechanisms and signs of psychological influence on children.
Additionally, several educational institutions have already implemented increased security measures, including the presence of police officers, installation of metal detectors, and improved communication with law enforcement.
“The safety of children is our collective responsibility. If we are attentive to them at home and in school, it will be significantly easier to protect them from actions they may regret for the rest of their lives,”
Biletsky concluded.
The shooting incident in Zakarpattia occurred on April 16 in the morning. According to police reports, a teenager drew a firearm during a lesson and fired several shots at a classmate. The injured student received prompt medical attention, and his life is not in danger.
