Belarusian Opposition Leader Visits Ukraine Amid Tensions with Lukashenko

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently remarked on a statement made by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko regarding a potential meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Belarus. Instead of an official delegation from Belarus, the visit was marked by the presence of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition.

During discussions with foreign representatives, Zelensky noted the irony of the situation, stating, “For the first time in this format, we have representatives from Belarus. Recently, Lukashenko suggested that the presidents of Ukraine and Belarus should meet. Interestingly, while Lukashenko made that statement, it was Svetlana Tikhanovskaya who arrived here.” The meeting included representatives from Belgium, Britain, Finland, the Netherlands, the United States, Slovenia, Moldova, North Macedonia, and Switzerland.

According to Tikhanovskaya, Lukashenko is entirely reliant on the Kremlin, asserting that only Russian President Vladimir Putin holds real influence over him. She emphasized that other international players are largely unable to alter the stance of the Belarusian regime or impact decisions made in Minsk.

During her visit to Kyiv, Tikhanovskaya also visited a site affected by a Russian strike, asserting Lukashenko’s complicity in Russia’s actions against Ukraine. She stated that the Belarusian regime bears responsibility for supporting Russian aggression and facilitating the Kremlin’s war efforts.

President Zelensky reiterated concerns regarding Belarus’s role in the ongoing conflict, indicating that Russia continues to utilize Belarusian territory for military operations against Ukraine and to exert pressure on European nations. He pointed out that kamikaze drones of the Shahed type are being launched from Belarus, alongside coordinated efforts to facilitate strikes.

The visit of Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to Ukraine highlights the complexities of Belarus's political landscape, particularly in relation to Russia. President Zelensky's remarks underscore ongoing security concerns regarding Belarus's involvement in the conflict with Ukraine.
