Analysis: Stalemate in Ukraine Conflict as Russian Forces Fail to Gain Ground

Recent assessments indicate that Russian military forces have not achieved any significant operational breakthroughs on the front lines over the past year, while Ukrainian Defense Forces have made notable advances during the winter and spring of 2026.

Analysts have pointed out that despite a declared ceasefire by Russia from May 9 to May 11, combat activities continued in certain areas. Overall, the pace of operations has somewhat diminished.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that the ceasefire lacked clearly defined mechanisms for monitoring and enforcement. The only publicly stated condition was Ukraine’s commitment not to strike Moscow during the May 9 parade, which Kyiv adhered to.

“The prevalence of mutual accusations and the continuation of localized activity from the first hours after the ceasefire was announced underscores the fact that a ceasefire without clear enforcement mechanisms is unlikely to be respected,” the report stated.

According to ISW estimates, Russian forces may have used the ceasefire to regroup, rotate troops, and manage logistics in preparation for further offensive actions.

Analysts emphasize that Ukrainian defenses continue to thwart Russian advances, preventing Moscow from achieving results that could be portrayed as significant victories before May 9.

The report highlights that since October 2025, Russian forces have failed to make substantial progress around Kostiantynivka, a key area in Ukraine’s defensive perimeter.

In contrast, Ukrainian forces have reportedly achieved their most significant battlefield successes since the operation in Russia’s Kursk region in August 2024.

ISW analysts remind that the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated a large part of Kupiansk in the fall of 2025 and reclaimed over 400 square kilometers of territory in southern Ukraine through counteroffensives during the winter and spring of 2026.

Additionally, at the end of April, Ukrainian military units liberated several settlements in the western part of the Zaporizhzhia region.

ISW also noted an intensification of Ukraine’s campaign of long-range strikes against Russian logistics, military equipment, and oil infrastructure.

Experts believe this has degraded Russia’s ability to conduct large-scale offensive operations and has impacted the functionality of Russian communication systems and drones on the front lines.

Separately, analysts mentioned Russia’s challenges following restrictions on the use of Starlink terminals in occupied territories, which have also created additional difficulties for Russian forces.

Recent evaluations reveal a lack of significant progress by Russian forces in the Ukraine conflict, while Ukrainian troops have made considerable gains. The ongoing dynamics highlight the complexities of the battlefield as both sides adapt to changing conditions.
