During an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dan Negrí, reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom. He called on Russia to immediately engage in negotiations to reach a peace agreement, emphasizing that time is not on Moscow’s side.
Negrí condemned Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and cultural heritage, specifically mentioning strikes on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. He stressed the need for a diplomatic resolution to the prolonged conflict, highlighting that the war has lasted too long.
Referencing statements made by President Trump at last week’s G7 summit, Negrí insisted on the urgency of concluding the war. He stated, “As President Trump clearly articulated, Russia must agree to a deal. Time is not on Moscow’s side.” He noted that Russia is suffering significant military losses, with approximately 40,000 soldiers reported dead or injured each month, while its economy is in dire straits. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to innovate on the battlefield.
Negrí concluded by asserting that diplomacy and negotiations are the only viable solutions, stating, “Nothing else will stop this senseless killing.”
The emergency session of the UN Security Council was convened on June 22 at Ukraine’s request, following a large-scale Russian attack on Ukrainian cities with numerous missiles and drones on June 15.
U.S. officials reiterated their support for Ukraine during a UN Security Council meeting, urging Russia to engage in peace negotiations. The call comes amid ongoing military conflict and significant losses for Russian forces.
