Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed gratitude towards UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his intention to resign on June 22. Zelensky acknowledged Starmer’s support and collaboration, stating that their joint efforts have strengthened Europe and enhanced the protection of lives.
Zelensky remarked, “We in Ukraine value Britain, and every meeting and conversation we have had has always been meaningful. Thank you for being always in touch, always active, and always striving to do what is necessary and truly helpful.” He further emphasized that Starmer would always be a welcome guest in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron also thanked Starmer for his contributions to strengthening Franco-British relations and his determination within the coalition supporting Ukraine. Macron highlighted their collaborative work in defense, nuclear energy, space, and innovation, particularly during the Franco-British summit last July. He stated, “We will continue to move forward on this path for the benefit of our peoples and Europe.”
On June 22, Starmer announced his plan to step down as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party. The name of his successor is expected to be revealed in September.
According to reports from the Observer prior to Starmer’s announcement, he has faced increasing pressure from Labour Party leadership, including members of his own cabinet. There is a growing number of parliamentarians supporting Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as a potential successor to Starmer.
Media sources indicate that Starmer is unlikely to resign immediately on June 22, suggesting he may remain in office for several weeks while the process of selecting his successor unfolds. It remains unclear whether the party will hold elections involving multiple candidates or if Burnham will garner sufficient support to be named as Starmer’s immediate successor.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has praised UK Prime Minister Starmer for his support and contributions as he announces plans to resign. French President Macron also acknowledged Starmer's role in strengthening international relations amid ongoing political changes in the UK.
