Ukrainian President Sends White Eagle Order Back to Poland Amid Diplomatic Dispute

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sent the White Eagle Order back to Polish President Karol Nawrocki, following Nawrocki’s decision to revoke the award. The move marks a significant moment in the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

In a post on social media, Zelensky shared a photograph of the order being dispatched via the Nova Poshta postal service to the office of the Polish president. He emphasized that the White Eagle Order is not merely an honor, but a symbol of the highest trust from the Republic of Poland, representing a special connection with the Polish state.

Zelensky stated, “Such a symbol requires not only merit but also respect for the values that form the foundation of our community.” He expressed his disappointment with the notion that the order could be associated with historical figures such as Catherine the Great, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schröder.

In his remarks, the Ukrainian president acknowledged the support and cooperation from the Polish people, which he described as crucial in the struggle for independence from Russia. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to defending itself in the ongoing conflict and expressed gratitude to all nations and leaders who stand with Ukraine in its pursuit of freedom.

Furthermore, Zelensky highlighted the importance of maintaining respectful dialogue between Ukraine and Poland, aiming to avoid misunderstandings regarding the complex historical narratives of both nations. He affirmed Ukraine’s dedication to ensuring that the sacrifices of innocent victims from the 20th century are honored.

In the backdrop of this diplomatic exchange, it is worth noting that on June 19, Polish President Nawrocki announced the revocation of the White Eagle Order due to the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). He asserted that Poland would not accept those who do not recognize the need to reject the cult of totalitarianism and violence.

Following Nawrocki’s announcement, several Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar, declared their intention to return Polish awards they had received. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed regret over the escalating dispute, stating that it only serves to benefit adversaries and shock allies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has returned the White Eagle Order to Poland after its revocation by Polish President Karol Nawrocki. This action reflects ongoing diplomatic tensions and differing historical perspectives between the two nations.
