German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed optimism regarding future collaboration between European leaders and US President Donald Trump to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Merz made these remarks during a press conference held on June 16 at the G7 summit in Évian, France.
“The words of President Trump give us all grounds for confidence: Russia must end this war. I consider this a clear signal,” Merz stated, referring to the day as a “day of hope.”
The Chancellor noted that he had detailed discussions with Trump about potential next steps and new sanctions against Russia. He emphasized that this dialogue fosters optimism that Europeans and Americans will collectively strive to conclude the war. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of continuing to bolster support for Kyiv and increasing pressure on Moscow to facilitate negotiations.
When asked whether Trump had committed to supporting new sanctions and if Europeans would be included in negotiations, Merz confirmed that these points had never been in doubt.
Merz asserted that Russia cannot achieve victory through military means, citing the detrimental impact of the war and sanctions on its economy.
“Perhaps this is the first time it provides a chance for peace,” he remarked.
The Chancellor indicated that Trump is gradually aligning with this perspective and is seeking a path to end the conflict alongside European leaders.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported having a separate conversation with Trump during the G7 summit, sharing a photo of their meeting.
The G7 summit, taking place from June 15 to 17 in Évian-les-Bains on the shores of Lake Geneva, is focusing on key issues including peace negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the situation surrounding Iran, particularly the signing of an agreement with the US and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
