European Leaders Support US-Iran Agreement, Urge Tehran to Restore Strait of Hormuz

Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have issued a joint statement welcoming the recent agreement between the United States and Iran. They emphasized the urgent need for Tehran to restore operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global oil shipments.

In their statement, they expressed a commitment to contribute to ensuring maritime security, stating, “We are determined to make our contribution to achieving this goal—consistent with our respective constitutional requirements—particularly through a strictly defensive and independent mission to ensure the safety of commercial shipping and conduct demining operations.”

The leaders also indicated their readiness to lift certain sanctions on Iran, contingent upon Tehran taking “clear, verifiable steps” regarding its nuclear program.

Furthermore, they highlighted their willingness to collaborate with the United States, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure that Tehran never acquires nuclear weapons.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. and Iran have reached a framework agreement. While the parties have signed the agreement remotely, an official signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19 in Geneva.

This framework extends the ceasefire for an additional 60 days, including provisions for Lebanon, reopens the Strait of Hormuz, and initiates discussions on Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. has also committed to discussing the easing of sanctions and the unfreezing of Iranian assets, provided that Iran meets specific conditions.

It is important to note that President Trump has warned that military action against Iran could resume if a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is not reached soon.

European leaders have expressed support for the recent US-Iran agreement, emphasizing the need for Iran to restore operations in the Strait of Hormuz. They are prepared to lift sanctions contingent on verifiable steps regarding Iran's nuclear program, while the US has announced an upcoming official signing ceremony for the agreement.
