The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has clarified Poland’s position regarding support for Ukraine’s European Union ambitions in light of recent tensions related to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Tusk emphasized that Poland will not compromise its backing of Ukraine’s aspirations for EU integration.
According to Tusk, Poland’s support will be contingent upon conditions that align with European standards, ensuring safety and mutual benefits for Poland. His remarks were made in response to concerns about potential obstacles in Ukraine’s EU accession talks, particularly following a diplomatic dispute between the two nations over the UPA.
On May 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded the Special Operations Center “North” the honorary title “in the name of the Heroes of the UPA” for exemplary execution of combat tasks. This decision provoked a strong reaction from Poland, with President Karol Nawrocki stating his principled stance on the matter and suggesting the possibility of revoking Zelensky’s highest state honor from Poland.
In response, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Kyiv did not intend to offend Poland. Officials clarified that within Ukrainian society, the UPA is primarily associated with the struggle against Russian imperialism and occupation.
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk reaffirmed the country's commitment to support Ukraine's EU integration, despite recent tensions over the UPA's recognition. The diplomatic rift highlights the complexities of historical narratives and contemporary political alliances in the region.
