The Hungarian government has decided to cease its blockade of the European Peace Facility (EPF), which reimburses EU member states for approximately 40% of the costs of weapons sent to Ukraine from their own stockpiles.
A European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that during a recent meeting, the Hungarian ambassador informed colleagues that Budapest would no longer obstruct the EPF. This change will release €6.6 billion that former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had vetoed since 2023, contributing to a total backlog exceeding €40 billion in the facility.
Following the victory of the Tisza party led by Péter Madár in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, there were doubts expressed by an EU official regarding the swift unblocking of the EPF by Budapest.
