President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the National Chernobyl Museum in Kyiv, which sustained severe damage during a recent Russian attack. This incident is part of a broader series of strikes that impacted multiple locations across the city.
Zelensky reported that the assault effectively destroyed the Chernobyl Museum and also caused damage to the National Art Museum and a building that housed the office of the German broadcaster ARD. This attack is one of many that have targeted civilian infrastructure in Kyiv.
Interior Minister Igor Klymenko noted that nearly fifty sites in Kyiv were affected, including residential buildings, shopping centers, educational institutions, and administrative offices of emergency services and police. The damage underscores the ongoing risks to civilian life and infrastructure amid the conflict.
In response to the destruction, authorities deployed engineering, robotic, and drone technology to assist in recovery efforts. Klymenko emphasized the dangers faced by rescuers, particularly due to the extensive areas of fire. He mentioned that a structural collapse occurred in one of the damaged buildings shortly after the attack.
Rescue operations commenced immediately after the strikes, with emergency services evacuating twelve individuals from a damaged dormitory. Additionally, many residents were assisted in escaping from burning high-rise buildings.
The attack also affected facilities associated with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including police stations and regional emergency service headquarters. While firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, operators in shelters continued to receive emergency calls from the public.
This incident follows a pattern of attacks on cultural and historical sites in Kyiv, which have included theaters, philharmonic halls, museums, libraries, universities, churches, and architectural landmarks.
