Call for Accountability in Ukrainian Military Amid Controversy Surrounding Anti-Corruption Activist

Members of the movement “Honest Mobilization” have voiced their concerns regarding the treatment of military personnel who have been engaged in combat for five years without respite. They are demanding accountability for individuals like Vitaliy Shabunin, who is facing allegations of fraud and evading military service.

Shabunin, head of the Center for Combating Corruption, recently received a notice of suspicion related to his alleged fraudulent activities and avoidance of mobilization. According to the movement, his discharge from the army due to purported poor eyesight undermines the credibility of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and may encourage others to evade service.

“Shabunin’s discharge from the army after three years of nominal service and a criminal case for fraud and evasion of mobilization is deeply troubling. Such actions tarnish the reputation of the Armed Forces and could lead to an increase in draft dodging. Individuals like Shabunin disgrace those who have suffered injuries or lost their health in defense of Ukraine,” the statement from “Honest Mobilization” reads.

The movement has called for justice for the military personnel who have been serving continuously and for stringent penalties for those who seek to evade their responsibilities. They argue that while individuals like Shabunin may exploit their positions for personal gain, the issues within the military and mobilization processes will only worsen.

Previously, the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) issued a notice of suspicion to Shabunin, accusing him of fraud and evasion of military service. Reports indicate that instead of fulfilling his military duties, he spent his time in Kyiv for personal activities, while continuing to receive a salary, thereby allegedly misappropriating over 224,000 hryvnias of state funds.
