Russian President Vladimir Putin has landed in China for his 25th state visit, just four days after former U.S. President Donald Trump’s departure. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed hope that Chinese President Xi Jinping might influence Putin to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Merz’s Remarks
Following discussions with the Swiss president in Berlin, Merz acknowledged that he does not foresee significant changes in the strategic relationship between Russia and China. However, he conveyed optimism, stating, “We associate this visit with hopes that President Xi will influence Putin to conclude the war in Ukraine, which he cannot win.”
Topics on the Agenda
The discussions between Putin and Xi are scheduled for May 19-20. Key topics will include bilateral relations and international issues. Russia aims to advance the construction of the ‘Power of Siberia-2’ gas pipeline through Mongolia to China, which would substantially enhance gas supplies alongside the existing ‘Power of Siberia-1’ pipeline.
Putin is accompanied by a delegation of ministers and leaders from both state-owned and private enterprises.
Post-Summit Expectations
Analysts predict that despite Trump’s visit, Beijing will continue supplying Russia with components for weapon production and support its economy. In return, Moscow is expected to share its combat experience and strategies for countering Western weapon systems with China.
President Putin's visit to China aims to strengthen ties and discuss the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Despite hopes for a resolution, analysts expect continued military and economic collaboration between Russia and China.
