Authorities in Germany have detained four individuals in connection with the supply of dual-use goods to Russia, which may have been utilized by the Russian military-industrial complex. The arrests, reported on May 18 by Politico, stem from an investigation into potential violations of export laws and sanctions evasion.
The detained individuals include Nikita S., identified as a key organizer of the operation, along with Evgeny R., Daniel A., and Boris M. They face charges related to export law violations, sanctions circumvention, and participation in a criminal organization, with potential sentences of up to ten years if convicted.
According to investigators, the scheme was centered around a company named Global Trade, based in Lübeck, Germany. Over a four-year period, approximately 16,000 shipments valued at over 30 million euros were processed through this network. A Russian company, Kolovrat, which is subject to U.S. sanctions, was reportedly the actual coordinator of these procurement activities.
The goods in question included microcontrollers, electronic components, sensors, measuring equipment, bearings, and other dual-use items. Some shipments have been linked to Russian defense enterprises and organizations involved in nuclear research.
Investigators found that employees of Kolovrat gained access to Global Trade’s email accounts, allowing them to communicate with European suppliers on behalf of German managers, place orders, and request commercial proposals.
Formally, the shipments were often routed to Turkey, where they were received by a company named MR Global before being forwarded to Russia. In some instances, the time between export from the EU and import into Russia was less than ten days.
The investigation was initiated after the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany gained access to internal documents from Kolovrat. These documents included accounts, correspondence, and supply data that enabled authorities to trace the procurement and movement of goods through Europe and Turkey to Russia.
This development follows a missile strike by Russia on Kyiv, which resulted in the deaths of 24 individuals. In response, President Zelensky stated that Moscow continues to acquire necessary components in violation of Western sanctions.
