On May 15, Ukraine successfully executed a prisoner exchange with Russia, resulting in the return of 205 Ukrainian defenders. This marks the first phase of a larger agreement to exchange a total of 1,000 prisoners between the two nations, facilitated by the United States.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the development, stating that those released included privates, sergeants, and officers. Many of these individuals had been held captive since 2022, having defended Ukraine in key locations such as Mariupol and the Azovstal steel plant, as well as various regions including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kyiv, and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
Earlier, on May 10, President Zelensky had indicated that preparations for the 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange were underway. He emphasized the role of the United States in brokering the agreement, expressing hope that American officials would actively ensure the terms of the exchange are upheld.
The Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters noted that a list of 1,000 prisoners was provided to the Russian side, organized based on the duration of captivity of the Ukrainian defenders.
