Significant Air Assault on Kyiv Results in Casualties and International Condemnation

On May 14, 2026, Ukraine experienced one of the most extensive air assaults since the onset of the conflict, leading to at least 12 fatalities, including a child, and numerous injuries in the capital, Kyiv. In response to the attack, May 15 has been declared a day of mourning.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that over 670 strike drones and 56 missiles were launched by Russian forces during the night, contributing to a total of more than 1,560 drone attacks targeting various cities and communities. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the interception rates for the drones and missiles were 94% and 73%, respectively.

The assault on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv region resulted in significant structural damage. In Kyiv, residential buildings collapsed, and 11 apartment complexes, along with 27 vehicles and various commercial properties, were affected. Additionally, the defense company Skyeton’s office was damaged. The Kyiv region reported injuries to seven individuals, including a child, across five districts.

In Kharkiv, 28 people were reported injured, three of whom were children. The international community has reacted strongly to the attacks, with various governments and diplomats condemning the Russian strikes. EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova, urged the global community not to overlook the crimes against civilians.

NATO’s representation in Ukraine expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people following the missile and drone strikes, emphasizing that international assistance will continue in response to the attacks aimed at destroying critical infrastructure. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced that the EU is preparing a €6 billion aid package for Ukraine in light of the recent assaults.

In the UK, Defence Secretary John Healey ordered the expedited delivery of air defense systems to Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiga has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the mass killings of civilians and to condemn the Russian attack on a UN humanitarian convoy in the Kherson region.

As the situation develops, the Ukrainian government continues to seek international support and solidarity against the ongoing aggression. The recent attacks have prompted discussions about further military aid and strategic responses from allied nations.

A large-scale air assault on Kyiv resulted in multiple casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. The international community has condemned the attacks, with calls for increased support for Ukraine amid ongoing military aggression.
