Casualties Reported Following Russian Strike in Kryvyi Rih

On May 12, a Russian strike on Kryvyi Rih resulted in casualties, with two fatalities and four individuals injured, according to the head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, Oleksandr Hanža.

Among the injured is a nine-month-old girl who has been hospitalized in critical condition. A 23-year-old woman is also receiving treatment for moderate injuries, while two other women, aged 45 and 74, are being treated on an outpatient basis. The fatalities include a 65-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man.

Local politician Oleksandr Vilkul reported that a Shahed drone struck a residential building. He noted that the young girl suffered severe injuries, including the loss of a leg, and was promptly evacuated to the hospital for urgent care. Firefighters have since extinguished the fire and are working to mitigate the aftermath.

Additionally, Hanža stated that four more individuals died in the Dubovikiv community in the Synelnykove region on the same day.

President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the attack, asserting that Russia continues to inflict harm on Ukrainians despite a temporary ceasefire. He emphasized the need for sustained pressure on Russia.

Russian military forces have been conducting regular attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various types of weaponry, including drones and missiles. Ukrainian authorities and international organizations have classified these strikes as war crimes, highlighting their targeted nature.

Attacks on essential services and healthcare facilities are viewed as attempts to deprive civilians of electricity, heat, water, communication, and medical assistance, which raises concerns about potential genocidal actions. Legal experts and human rights advocates argue that the ongoing conflict has seen Russia commit acts that may fall under the definition of genocide.

The 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates its 149 signatory countries to prevent and punish acts of genocide in both wartime and peacetime.

The convention defines genocide as actions aimed at the complete or partial destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Indicators of genocide include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily harm, deliberately creating conditions intended to destroy the group, and forcibly transferring children from one group to another.

Russian leadership has denied that its military targets civilian infrastructure during the ongoing conflict, asserting that it does not intentionally harm civilians or destroy hospitals, schools, and energy or water supply facilities.

A recent Russian strike in Kryvyi Rih has resulted in two deaths and several injuries, including a critically injured infant. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing allegations of war crimes and potential genocidal actions by Russian forces against Ukrainian civilians.
