Apple has officially launched version 26.5 for its entire range of operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. This update introduces critical security patches alongside several significant features.
Enhanced Privacy and Security
The most anticipated addition in version 26.5 is the full support for end-to-end encryption for the RCS standard. This marks a significant development for Apple’s ecosystem, as messaging between iPhone and Android users will now receive the same level of protection previously available only within iMessage.
Currently, this feature is in beta and available to a limited number of carriers, though Apple plans to expand support in the near future.
Users will be able to easily check the encryption status of their chats; a lock icon will appear in the Messages app if a conversation is encrypted. Additionally, the update includes numerous security patches addressing vulnerabilities identified in earlier versions of the systems.
Updates for macOS Tahoe
For Mac users, version 26.5 represents a further step in the evolution of the Tahoe system. The most noticeable change is the introduction of the Liquid Glass visual style, which replaces flat elements with semi-transparent, glossy surfaces that adapt their color based on the content beneath.
Spotlight has also undergone significant changes, evolving from a simple search bar into an intelligent control center. Users can now perform complex tasks without needing to open corresponding applications, such as creating calendar events, sending emails, or managing the clipboard directly through the Spotlight interface.
Enhanced Ecosystem and Communication Features
The update further deepens device integration through expanded Continuity features. A fully functional Phone app has finally been added to Mac, allowing users to receive calls, access voicemail, and utilize the Call Screening spam filtering system.
Moreover, the Hold Assist feature enables users to avoid listening to music while waiting on hold; the system will notify them when an operator is available.
For gamers, Apple has introduced an updated Games app and the Metal 4 technology, which enhances graphics and performance in demanding games. A low-power mode has also been implemented, specifically optimized for extended gaming sessions on MacBook.
End of Support for Intel
A significant announcement for owners of older computers is the confirmation that macOS 26 Tahoe will be the final version supporting Intel-based devices. Starting next year, macOS 27 will exclusively support Apple’s M-series chips.
While version 26.5 will still function on certain Intel Mac models from 2019 to 2020, these devices will no longer have access to Apple Intelligence features.
Additionally, the upcoming WWDC in June is expected to showcase an updated Siri based on Google’s Gemini language models, allowing users to choose third-party AI models for working with text and images directly within the operating system.
Apple's release of version 26.5 across its operating systems introduces significant security enhancements, including end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging. The update also features a new visual style for macOS, improved Spotlight functionality, and confirms the end of support for Intel-based devices.
